Wearing Your Identity: The Cultural Impact of Ethnic and Western Fusion in Fashion

Fashion is more than clothing, it allows us to express ourselves through identity, culture and heritage, it brings different worlds together as it lets us present who we are through fashion and bring our creative ideas to life. Fashion designers can create new perspectives by showing how clothing can represent much more than just fabric. It allows us to truly understand that fashion has a deeper meaning, all the way from the fabric’s origins to combining specific materials and elements to create art.

Fashion has for many years been a way for individuals to express themselves, communicate messages, and portray certain identities. It’s more than just pieces of fabric, it reflects experiences, identities and stories without uttering a single word. 

Brands during this year’s Stockholm Fashion Week, such as Temesgen, introduce audiences who may not be familiar with Ethiopian fashion and culture with a fusion of Swedish minimalistic fashion to a new perspective through clothing and design. 

Having attended Temesgen’s presentation, we did not only see models wearing the brand’s clothing, but also experienced how deeply heritage and culture are embedded in the vision. From the atmosphere created by the music to the clothing, everything contributed to an impression that this was more than just a presentation. 

Identity

But why is culture so important in Western fashion? It is a new generation of fashion where, instead of shying away from heritage to fit into societal norms, new brands have emerged to bridge the gap between western and cultural clothing, creating a fused vision of both identities. We are seeing a growing cultural influence in the fashion industry through their creations, where brands such as Temesgen incorporate these ideas into their work.

 It reflects a wider movement in western fashion, giving a sense of comfort and belonging to those who once avoided embracing their heritage. 

What does it truly mean to wear your identity? To wear your identity is more than just wearing a piece of clothing, it is to wear something that speaks for you, even when you are not. It is something that you embrace.  We have also seen this when the Democratic Republic Of Congo team arrived at the World cup 2026, wearing their cultural clothing, Sapeur, to show their identity. Their choice of clothing was an exceptional way of letting fashion speak for itself.  It was not just about style, but about making that statement and showcasing their heritage and identity on a global stage that is viewed by millions of people.

 Seeing cultural and heritage through fashion and wearing it proudly is a statement in itself. It is about embracing and honouring who you are.  Fashion is no longer just about style, but has become a way of preserving culture and showing the world where you come from, which was strongly showcased by Stockholm Fashion Week.
