Sweden is a country known for its humane values, but ironically enough, our government seems to have forgotten the concept of democracy regarding minorities. Young people with disabilites are not being heard, I am not being heard.
Where do we nowadays look for what people think on any issue? Of course, we go to Internet sites, forums, and look at different blogs. And sometimes there is a feeling of oversaturation. A huge category of people call the worldwide web dump and believe that there is no one to dialogue with. Such people don not even try to speak. They know that their voice will be lost, that it will become a ghost. But I tried to go back several decades, when letters were the only way to reach someone. I found a site where people put up their adresses because they want to receive letters. I sent out more than forty letters.
More and more children and youth are at risk of falling through the increasing gaps of Sweden’s social safety net, with exclusion and vulnerability as a result. When looking into the future, we see prior threats becoming reality. At the same time, current legislation does not protect the most vulnerable. Groups of children and youth in vulnerability are pitted against each other. Political efforts to support one group often take place at the expense of another, while the youth voice often is excluded from the solution building and democratic decision making processes.
One of the quivering questions today is freedom of speech. Young Belarusian journalists with a special fire in their eyes and a big desire in their hearts yearn for this freedom. They need their voices to be heard now, today.
In this day and age, where the majority of young people get most of their information through social media and search engines, the practise of source-criticism and objectiveness becomes more important than ever. Engaging young people to care about politics and expressing their opinions, as well as listening to opposing opinions, becomes more important than ever in order to ensure a democratic future.
